Information for incoming students
- The Coordinator of the Programme Erasmus+ at the Mathematical Institute is Dr Motiejus Valiunas (room 306).
- For general information on Erasmus+ at the University of Wrocław, please visit the website of the International Office.
- We offer several courses in English at the Mathematical Institute. In addition, several other courses may also be offered in English upon request. Specific information for the year 2025/26 will appear here at a later date.
- The information on the courses offered in English in the Summer Semester 2024/25 is presented below.
General information on courses at the Mathematical Institute
- Most of the courses at the Mathematical Institute are taught in Polish by default; however, for most of the courses it is possible to (at least partially) change the language of instruction to English, provided that such a change is requested far in advance. Please contact the Coordinator for requesting such changes of language as early as possible.
- If the change of language is possible, this is usually done in one of two ways:
- Small courses (generally, those with a single group of exercise classes) and non-standard courses (e.g. those consisting of only exercise classes or lab sessions without lectures) can normally be taught in English in their entirety.
- For large courses (generally, those with multiple groups of exercise classes), the change of language is normally available only for exercise classes, with lectures taking place in Polish. In this case, a reading list for self-study and other material (such as problem lists) in English shall be provided by the lecturer.
- The catalogue of current and past courses at the Mathematical Institute is available here. Most of the courses suitable for Erasmus+ students are in the groups Compulsory subjects (O) and Advanced optional subjects (M), discussed below.
- Compulsory subjects – Przedmioty obowiązkowe (O): these are courses directed towards first and second year Bachelor's students. Most of them come in the "standard" and "extended" versions.
- Standard versions (without the letter "R" and usually denoted with an arabic numeral): these are the courses that are taken by the majority of the students. Such courses are advised for exchange students who have not taken a similar course in the past (although if such a course has any prerequisites, courses equivalent or similar to these prerequisites should have been taken before).
- Extended versions (denoted by the letter "R" or a roman numeral): these are the courses that are normally taken by the strongest students or students intending to obtain a particular specialisation (especially those specialising in pure mathematics). The material covered in an extended version of a course is significantly deeper than that covered in a standard version, and the classes are much faster-paced. The extended courses advised for very strong exchange students, or to students who have covered similar topics to those lectured but at a more basic level.
- Advanced optional subjects – Zaawansowane przedmioty do wyboru (M): these are normally directed towards second and third year Bachelor's students, as well as Master's students. Please keep in mind that:
- Some of the courses in the catalogue only take place once every two years (and so may not be available in the desired academic year), and some of them are no longer taught. Whether or not the course will be taught the next academic year can usually be inferred from the years the course was taught in the past.
- Some of the courses are directed towards students specialising in particular areas, especially pure mathematics. The comment above on the "extended" versions of compulsory courses roughly applies in this case.
Courses in English offered in Summer Semester 2024/25
The following courses at the Mathematical Institute are planned to be taught in English during the Summer Semester 2024/25:
In addition, the following courses are planned to taught
partially in English – the lectures will be taking place in Polish, but the exercise classes for one group will be held in English:
If you would like to take any of the latter two courses, please contact the corresponding lecturer at the beginning of the semester, who will be able to provide you with a list of literature in English containing the lectured material.
Some of the other courses at the Mathematical Institute may be accessible to Erasmus+ students. If you are interested in any of these courses, please contact the Coordinator. There may also be courses suitable for exchange students of Mathematics in other departments of the University; if you are interested in such a course, please contact the Coordinator at the corresponding department.
